Shadow Catchers: Photography that goes beyond a camera

Cameras are not necessary to make a beautiful photograph. Five international artists have for the past 20 years been creating works of are by places images between a light source and photographic paper. These camera-less photographers’ work will be on display at the Victoria and Albert art museum from 13 October 2010 – 20 February 2010.

In the past, photography has always played the role of a documentarian by recording what exists. Camera-less photography goes beyond the role of recording the world. This unique style of photography creates images that are not found in the world around by manipulating photographic paper by varying light sources or adding chemicals to the paper. Each photograph is truly and original work of art.

The photographer’s on display look to reveal a world beyond what we see, to show the hidden forces of nature such as sound waves and how rivers flow to the matter of time and energy. The exhibit will display the works of Floris Neusüss, Pierre Cordier, Gary Fabian Miller, Susan Derges and Adam Fuss. Guests will also be able to get fun “create your own” camera-less photography kits.

The Victoria and Albert Museum is less than 30 minutes away from umi London’s luxury budget hotel. A brief walk from the Notting Hill hotel will be provide you access to several tube stations that can take you directly to the Victoria and Albert Museum.
